Michael’s interest in mermen directly intersects with his interests in mythology, ancient cartography, cryptozoology, fantasy and things of that nature. He used to print out and find as much information as he could on imaginary animals like the unicorn, centaur, kraken, and mermaids. When he started to draw the mermen, their world really fell into place. In his post-mermaid world, the mermen are left with each other, all males, with no way future generations to be had. The nature of the mermen is to drink alcohol, idle, and get into debauched relationships or violent fist fights. They adore things from the above world that really have no functionality of them such as canes, watches, rafts, and etc. Mermen tend to drink themselves into a dehydrated state close to death. They smoke seaweed and are lonely. Some are finely dressed; some are barbaric or more savage. There was a brief time when mermen were captured for sport, abused, and or hunted.
