Here is a very interesting collage series by our talented friend Charlotte Slegers.
One might simplify this concept by saying: men act and women appear. Men look at women, women watch themselves being looked at.
(…) The surveyor of woman in herself is male: the surveyed female. Thus she turns herself into an object – and most particularly an object of vision: a sight.”
With these words, John Berger’s ‘Ways of Seeing’ inspired the artist to look into this aspect of being looked at as a female, but most importantly: how to represent this in an image and how to change these roles. The collages represent women not as objects but as spectators themselves.
Looking back at the viewer, as well as luring them into the image.
